1.The most common problem/question I have encountered so far is "when I click on one of the worksheets or review questions, I get an error message instead of them downloading. What am I doing wrong?"
The answer is that you are doing nothing wrong. You need to tell Netscape how to handle a Word document. The lab machines in the SBA automatically do this, but if you are using another lab machine or a home machine - you will get this error message. There are two things you can do --
1. One of the options in the error message is to "Save File.." You can save the file to the hard drive of the computer or to a floppy disc. Then open Microsoft Word and open the file (or download the WordPerfect version and open WordPerfect).
2. The other option is to configure Netscape to recognize certain files as Word (or WordPerfect) files and open the word processor on its own (Note: Internet Explorer automatically opens Word documents). Email me if you are interested in doing this, and I will send you detailed instructions. But I generally recommend option 1 unless you are using your own computer.
2.How do I view Acrobat documents?
Acrobat is probably the easiest way to view and print the course materials. To be able to do this, you will need to make sure the version of Netscape or Internet Explorer that you are using has the Acrobat "Plug-In." All of the business school labs have it and some of the other labs on campus do, as well. The Acrobat Plug-In is free if you want to download it to your machine at home or in the dorm. Just go to Adobe's Acrobat web site and follow the instructions for downloading and installing it.
3.Another common problem is sending mail from Netscape with MUnet. According to MCIS you need to have the following information in your preferences:
4.Version Issues: I have put the PowerPoint files out there as version 4.0. The Word files should be readable by Word more recent than 2.0. The Word Perfect Files are in version 5.1.
5.Getting the gradebook to work -- make sure that you are using the appropriate password and codename. It is case sensitive, meaning that whether you use capital letters or not makes a difference. You also need to have a version of Netscape or IE that is Javascript capable. This means version 2.0 or higher of both. Also make sure that in your preferences, under Network Preferences - under languages (I think), that the box next to JavaScript Enabled is checked.
If you have questions, feel free to submit them to the
instructors. You can do so by selecting Ask a Question from The Coffee Shop's table of contents. (Or
you can click the underlined link in the previous sentence to
accomplish the same thing.)
Additionally, you can post general questions, comments, thoughts, musings, gripes, etc., about the class and its content on the Bulletin Board. To do so, select your section's bulletin board from The Coffee Shop's table of contents. (Again, you can also click the link in the previous sentence.)
