South Korea's History

The land of South Korea has had people living on it for thousands of years. There is evidence that it was first inhabited before 10,000 BC. Throughout much of its history, both China and Japan have invaded South Korea. This ended in 1910 when Japan formally annexed Korea and it became a Japanese colony.  After Japan was defeated in World War II, Korea was liberated. A wartime agreement allowed US troops to occupy the southern part of Korea and Soviet troops to occupy the northern part. After the US and Soviet troops left in 1950 the North Korean army invaded South Korea. This was the start of the Korean War. In 1953 there was a truce between the two sides, making the border of the two countries where it was before the war started. This line is known as the 38th parallel. Since this time South Korea has enjoyed peaceful, yet nervous times from the north.
