Hawaii's History

Polynesians settled Hawaii about 1500 years ago. In 1778 a British explorer named Captain James Cook discovered the islands and they became known to the rest of the world. As soon as 1820, American missionaries arrived and started to teach Hawaiians to live like people from the west.

Hawaii became a US territory in 1900. During this time American influences spread throughout the islands. In 1908 the US Navy built a naval vase called Pearl Harbor on one of the islands. On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the US began fighting in World War II. After the war Hawaii applied for statehood and on August 21, 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state.
