Internships and
Independent Study
Credit for Internships
1. FIN 330 (0 hours) Professional Practice. In this case the internship is
verified. The Department Chair will then register the student into FIN 330 (see
requirements below).
An independent Study course (FIN X77). See below for the description of
the independent study course.
2. If a
student wishes to receive one credit hour, the student can speak with the Chair
of the department. The student would need to provide information regarding the
company they plan to (or did) work for (an acceptance letter will generally have
enough information). The student would then need to write a short paper
regarding the work that they performed during the internship and how it pertains
to their area of study or their future career options.
3. If a
student wishes to receive 2 or 3 credit hours for an internship, the student
would need to engage in an independent study with a faculty member. The student
and the faculty member will agree on the requirements of the independent study
prior to the internship. These requirements include the number of credit hours,
number of contact hours, time period for the course, course content and product
evaluation. The Department Chair must approve the independent study.
FIN 330 – Professional Practice (0)
This is a zero (0) credit course designed to recognize on
the transcript the participation in internships or like kinds of activity. Some
employers require that the student be connected to the University during the
internship and many have accepted this method. The University will not sign any
indemnity, litigation release or hold harmless agreements with the sponsor. If
this is the way you would like to proceed, you need to send a statement of what
you are doing and where. Also contact information is required. In order to
receive credit, the Department requires from the sponsor a written statement on
company letter head that the student completed the internship. Please send this
to the Chair, Department of Finance, 120 Upham Hall,
Oxford, OH 45056; FAX: 513.529-8598. Please check with
the registrar for any fees applicable for this course.
In no case will any form of contract or
hold harmless agreement be signed to support
any internship or other experience.
